    Garbage classification

    Throwing garbage into the wrong waste bin in Guangzhou could now cost the equivalent of a fancy dinner.

    As Guangzhou tries to reduce the amount of garbage, it has decided to impose fines on people who fail to put rubbish in the right place.

    The regulations require residents and organizations to put garbage into four separate bins labeled recyclable waste, kitchen waste, hazardous waste and other waste.

    

    Metro worker killed

    One worker was killed and four others injured on Monday when a manually controlled chain hoist broke loose in a Metro Line 5 tunnel in Shenzhen.

    The tragedy happened in the tunnel 1 kilometer from the Shangshuijing Metro Station in Buji at 4 a.m. A preliminary investigation by Longgang District Safety Production Supervision Bureau found mechanical failure was responsible.

    

    Patent lead

    The Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park (SHIP) took the lead among domestic industrial parks in the number of international patent applications last year.

    The SHIP applied for 12,158 patents last year, accounting for more than 24 percent of the total number in Shenzhen. There were 8,947 invention patents applied for by the SHIP last year, more than 37 percent of the city’s total.

  


  

    Toddler fights obesity

    China is facing an obesity* crisis, an issue best underscored by Lu Zhihao, a 4-year-old from Foshan in Guangdong who weighs 62 kg.

    The uncommon size of the toddler is partially due to hormonal* imbalance. However, the kid’s constant demand for food is often met by his doting* parents and visitors.
