    Universiade flame

Five young people from five continents ignited the Shenzhen Universiade flame through a concave lens on Monday at Qinghua University in Beijing.

The group lighting was different from the common practice of international sports events, which usually had only one person light the flame.

The five young people included Li Luya, 20, a student from Shenzhen University, and four foreign students studying at Qinghua. The flame will be kept in a special lantern and carried back to Shenzhen on a chartered flight under tight security.

    Tallest SZ landmark

The construction of Kingkey 100, Shenzhen’s tallest building in Caiwuwei, western Luohu District, would be completed in August, developer Kingkey Group announced on Saturday at a ceremony to mark the completion of its main construction.

Soaring 441.8 meters, Kingkey 100 has 100 floors, surpassing the neighboring Diwang Building (383.95 meters), the previous city record-holder. Designed by TFP Farrells of London, Kingkey 100 is the world’s eighth highest building.

    Death sentence for student

Yao Jiaxin, a Xi’an Conservatory of Music student who murdered a young mother after hitting her with his car in last October, was sentenced to death by a court in Xi’an on Friday.

Yao, 21, ran into cyclist Zhang Miao while driving his Chevrolet Cruze on October 20. Fearing Zhang would remember his license plate number and report him to authorities, he stabbed her to death. The court also handed down a life-long revocation of Yao’s political rights in Friday’s first instance judgment and ordered him to pay 45,498.50 yuan (US$6,983) in compensation to Zhang’s family.

    Unrest in Syria

Syrian security forces fired on funeral processions that drew tens of thousands on Saturday, one day after the bloodiest crackdown so far in the uprising against President Bashar Assad. The shootings pushed the two-day death toll to more than 120 and two lawmakers and a religious leader resigned in disgust over the killings.
