As director Rob Reiner showed in his 1986 film, "Stand by Me," he has a feel for the late 1950s and early '60s, when he was growing up. "Flipped" is adapted* from a young-adult novel by Wendelin Van Draanen, with a screenplay by Reiner and Andrew Scheinman. The film is particular* about details. Even the songs are arranged according to the time sequence* they appeared in history in the six years during which its two main characters, Juli Baker (Madeline Carroll) and Bryce Loski (Callan McAuliffe), go from grade school to junior high.

The movie observes the developing relationship of Juli and Bryce, who live across the street from each other. The two take turns telling the story in a she-said, he-said format, as they recall the same incidents*. Juli, the more willful* of the two, remembers the moment she "flipped" for Bryce on the day her family moved into the house across the street from his.

From their very first contact, Bryce shuns* her under a policy he calls "strategic avoidance*," but Juli makes a beeline for* him at every chance.

Of the two children, Juli is the spunkier*. To prevent a sycamore* from being cut down by the local authorities, she climbs to the top of it and refuses to come down.

When Bryce talks about the scruffy* condition of the Bakers' front yard, Juli starts a landscaping makeover*. She raises chickens and sells eggs, and her school science project about hatching chicks wins a prize.

Bryce, on the other hand, is a nobody often telling little white lies*, although McAuliffe acts with enough charm to make him likable.

The Loskis are richer than the Bakers but less impressive* in character. Bryce's disappointed father, Steven (Anthony Edwards), takes a pleasure in looking down on his neighbors. In a scene, Steven's outgoing wife, Patsy (Rebecca De Mornay), insists on having the Bakers to dinner, and trouble begins. The movie's moral grounding wire is Patsy's father, Chet (John Mahoney), a wise old man who befriends Juli.

Juli's parents, Richard (Aidan Quinn) and Trina (Penelope Ann Miller), are short of money because Richard is supporting his mentally disabled brother, Daniel (Kevin Weisman).

The movie's cozy ending leaves you feeling warm and gooey* as Juli and Bryce finally befriend each other.
