Healthy foods to beat summer’s heat
    2011-06-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

DURING the summer, the human body perspires due to the sweltering weather in Guangdong. That can result in the loss of fluids and nutrients. As a result, qi (vital energy) can be lost along with yin (vital essence). In turn, that can affect the spleen and stomach leading to a loss of appetite. People tend to feel tired and thirsty if they are lacking qi and yin. Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine believe people must nourish their bodies during summer.

The principle of taking a tonic in the summer is based on eating light food that helps invigorate the spleen and help dispel heat. Stewed duck with winter melon is an excellent choice. Other options are lean pork, fresh fruit, gorgon fruit and mung beans.

It is also acceptable to have congee which is nutritious and helps digestion. New-rice congee is fragrant and tasty. Mixed with various coarse grains, fruit and vegetables, congee has various benefits. Mung bean congee can eliminate heat and toxins. Celery congee can clear away heat and relax the bowels. Lotus root congee can regulate vital energy and the functions of the spleen and stomach. Congee with seeds of job’s tears can nourish the stomach; and lily bulb congee can invigorate the lungs and regulate vital energy.

Fruit juice such as orange, apple, lemon, pineapple, haw and watermelon are healthy choices. These juices can eliminate heat, produce saliva and body fluids, replenish qi and nourish yin.

Medical research indicates bitter-tasting foods help lift people’s spirits and relieve pressure. These include balsam pears, lilies and chrysanthemum buckwheat. (SD-Agencies)
