THE Eastern New Zone is a landmark in the city’s development. The area has grown from quiet farmland into a dynamic downtown since urbanization started in the 1990s. In 1992, buildings for the city government and municipal committee of the CPC were built in the new zone, followed by commercial centers and office buildings. The 100-meter-wide Xianggang Road West in the new zone is the widest boulevard in Qingdao. The new zone is now a financial, commercial, cultural and tourism center and the symbol of new Qingdao. Meanwhile, the well-preserved traditional architecture in the area has become a tourist attraction. (Chen Ting, Duan Xiaodong) |
