6,000-year-old reservoir found
    2011-06-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A STRANGE hole was found near an ancient ruin in Jimo and archaeologists said it could be a reservoir built about 6,000 years ago.

The hole is about 3 meters deep, like a giant water jar on the ground. It was the first such hole found at the ruin since excavations started in 2007.

“It was quite possibly a reservoir for ancient people. About 6,000 years ago, there was a small group of people living in the area. Because they lived close to the sea, it was very difficult for them to find drinking water. So they made this hole to save rainwater,” an archaeologist said. (Wang Yuanyuan, Kang Xiaohuan)
