NEARLY 1,000 overseas Chinese have established high-tech enterprises in Qingdao since 2001, according to the city’s overseas Chinese affairs office. The city has introduced more than 4,400 returned overseas Chinese since 2001, who were from developed countries such as the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Japan and Singapore and majored in information technology, bio-medicine, ocean technology, new materials, chemicals, mechanical industry, finance and law. More than 500 people with doctorates have been introduced to the city. Yin Xuejun, a doctorate holder, said he met at an exhibition representatives of Gerb Group in Germany, which had been planning to open a branch in China. Seeking to further his career in China, Yin arrived in Qingdao in 1998 and opened the company. Yin’s company now has 151 employees and pays a yearly tax of more than 40 million yuan. The city’s overseas Chinese affairs office planned to hold a promotion of high-tech ocean projects to attract more overseas Chinese.
