PEOPLE can buy social insurance in Qingdao a month after their hukou is transferred to the city, according to the city’s social security department. The department announced a new regulation on social insurance recently, explaining the policies for demobilized soldiers, disabled people and farmers whose land was taken for public use. In 2011, the city’s endowment insurance will cover Laoshan, Huangdao districts as well as Jiaozhou, Jiaonan, Pingdu and Laixi cities. Eligible residents can get their pensions after applying and paying the insurance. However, former military officers who found jobs on their own cannot collect the social insurance as the government already pays them a monthly subsidy. Those who have already bought the insurance should cancel their accounts and return their pensions. Disabled people over 60 can apply for the insurance and their insurance money will be paid by the government, while those over 60 who have just transferred their hukou to Qingdao can receive a basic pension every month.
