    Torch relay

Residents played a leading role in Sunday’s Shenzhen Universiade torch relay*, which involved 267 torchbearers and covered coastal areas in Nanshan and Futian districts.

The 14-kilometer relay route covered landmarks such as Binhai Boulevard, Mangrove Nature Reserve and the memorial park of Shenzhen’s 30-year reform and opening up in Lianhua Hill Park.

    Volunteers arrive

More than 350 volunteers from other parts of the country had arrived in Shenzhen to start 19 days of service for the Universiade, the volunteer department of the Universiade said on Monday.

The volunteers are all university students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other parts of the mainland.

    Metro fault

Hong Kong MTR Shenzhen Company has apologized for a fault which led to a delay of an hour and three quarters on Longhua Line on Sunday morning.

The MTR did not give a reason for the fault and said it would set up a special team to investigate the incident.

    Memorial razed

A controversial* stone monument dedicated to Japanese settlers who died in China when they tried to return home in the immediate aftermath* of the World War II has been demolished*, just days after there was an attempt to destroy it.

Authorities in Fangzheng County in Heilongjiang Province confirmed last week they had spent 700,000 yuan (US$108,500) to erect* the stone monument in the county’s Sino-Japanese friendship garden to honor dead Japanese settlers.
