The joy of shopping online
    2011-08-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

If you want to look sharp but don't want to burn a hole in your wallet, shopping online is a good choice. Swallow your pride and forget about luxury brands, inexpensive outfits can look good and be a comfortable wear too.

Linda Peng

I STARTED shopping online half a year ago.

Choosing the right top, skirt, shoes and accessories each morning was once a headache for me, but now it's become fun and easy thanks to online shopping.

Shopping Web sites don't just provide stylish garments at lower prices than shopping malls. They also save you the time and trouble driving to the mall and walking from shop to shop.

Sit comfortably at your desk and click the mouse, a few days later the delivery guy will come to your door with your new clothes.

My first online shopping order went to www.taobao.com, whose many shops do not accept payment on delivery. Later I tried two other sites, www.monbasa.com and www.m18.com. They all accept payment on delivery and promise full refunds if you don't like the purchase. As a result, these two are my favorite shopping sites.

Before you click to buy an item, you should always read other buyers' comments. They could be useful for you to choose your right size and color. They could also help you find out if the item is of good quality and fits the seller's description.

Also keep in mind that fashion sites always have special-offer items promoted with competitive prices. Take a look when you have time. Your favorite dresses may be on that list.

When you shop online, it's difficult to stay focused.

So you'd better have some idea of what to look for before you start out. The secret of a successful purchase is to find the dress that compliments your figure and expresses your personality.

Comfort is another important issue. Once you find the clothes that fit, you can mix and match to spice up your look.

For example, a top and a skirt in contrastive colors such as yellow and purple, pink and blue, or red and blue can freshen up your image. When you wear a long and loose dress, a waistband is a must.

For office ladies, it's never wrong to wear black and white. A white, tight-fitting T-shirt with a black miniskirt or a pair of ankle-length pants will bring out the perfect leisurely look in summer. While in office, you can add a black waist-length blouse over the T-shirt to give you that formal look.

See, shopping online is fun and easy to do.

Getting to sleep is monkey business

FORGET counting sheep -- Britons now prefer listening to lions roaring and monkeys calling to help them nod off, according to a new survey.

The poll, which questioned 2,000 adults about falling asleep at night, found that birds twittering and rainforest noises are the most soothing sounds for one in five people at bedtime, with fewer than one in 10 relying on counting sheep to send them into slumber.

"One thing these noises do is stop intrusive thoughts," said John Shneerson, President of the British Sleep Society and consultant at Papworth Sleep Center in Britain.

"These are normally worries about the previous day, or worries about tomorrow -- any active thoughts that prevent people from drifting into sleep. A semi-repetitive noise like wind blowing or waves crashing, which has an occasional rhythm change, works by distracting you. The sound can't be too boring but should not be so stimulating that you actively think about it -- it has to be something in the middle," Shneerson said.

A lot of people find listening to these noises useful in getting to sleep, although this has not yet been thoroughly researched, he said.

While the relaxing properties of natural sound may not come as a surprise, noises generally considered to be irritating, such as passing traffic and ticking clocks can also be soporific, according to the survey.

"My advice for getting a good night's sleep would be avoid caffeine in the evening and try to stick to a regular sleeping pattern by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, despite work and social pressures," Shneerson said.
