WANG PENG, a government employee in Qingdao, has been rewarded for rescuing a farmer from the scene of a tractor accident. Although the farmer later died of his wounds, Wang was recognized for his courage and selflessness in attempting to save him. Wang went to Linyi on business Oct. 29 and saw a tractor crash into a ditch and get stuck. The farmer’s wife stood at the side of a nearby road calling for help, but it was dark and no other drivers stopped to help. “I saw her on the side of the road with blood all over her face. I was a little worried because I thought it might be a scam or they might blame me for the accident, but I still decided to help her because nothing was more important than saving a life,” said Wang. Wang helped the farmer out of the tractor. “I learned some first-aid skills when I was in the military, so I helped stop the bleeding and called 110 and 120. When they arrived, we sent him to the hospital and I left discretely. But unfortunately, he died at the hospital,” he said. The farmer’s son wanted to pay Wang a reward, but Wang refused. “Their family has been through a tragedy and I could not accept their money,” he said. “Wang did not tell anybody about the accident,” said Jiang Daiji, Wang’s boss. Jiang hoped all 3,600 members of his bureau could learn from Wang, helping those in need. Wang is 29 years old. He served in the military for eight years and entered the bureau in 2009.
