    One of my colleagues used to frequently sponge off other people. She thought she was being clever by borrowing their items such as cosmetics and clothing, and never returning them.

    Gradually, people began to keep her at arm’s length; managers reminded her indirectly; even the boss frowned upon what she was doing. Unfortunately, she did not think she was doing wrong and did not change her ways. Eventually, she was fired, like a drowned mouse. We all knew that she did not want to lose her job.

    Becoming a sponge harms the people around you but mostly harms yourself. You may lose your friends, your good reputation and even your job. Yes, “Penny wise, pound foolish” is an unchanging truth.
