Opening highlights
    2012-02-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CRYSTAL’S long history of hosting the show is filled with memorable opening moments. Highlights include:

    1990:

In his opening segment for his first show, Crystal cracked several jokes about the industry before talking about the lack of music. “I know what you’re thinking. ‘Where’s my opening production? Where’s that big, terrible number that usually opens the Oscars?’” Then he launched into what would become a signature tribute tune: “It’s a wonderful night for Oscar. Who will win?”

    1992:

Crystal was wheeled out by two orderlies, masked and bound like cannibalistic psychopath Dr. Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambs.” He walked over to Lambs star Anthony Hopkins in the audience and said: “I’m having some of the academy over for dinner. Care to join me?”

    1993:

The first sight of Crystal came atop a giant Oscar statue being pulled, chariot-style, by a growling Jack Palance (who managed to show off his famous one-armed push-ups). “I’m Spartacus,” Crystal announced after sliding off his statue. “I’m so glad the entrance is over,” Crystal added. “I’ve been under such pressure.”
