QINGDAO Undersea World has launched a conservation and research project of banded houndsharks, a rare offshore species. Growing in the East China Sea, the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, banded houndshark used to frequently appear in flocks near Qingdao. However, they are no longer seen in the area. Qingdao Undersea World has more than 10 banded houndsharks, which have not bred in recent years. Experts said the water is not deep enough and reduces their breeding ability. In an effort, the undersea world has increased the water depth of Shark Bay, where the banded houndsharks live, to two meters. If they breed, they will be released to the offshore area. Qingdao Undersea World has recently held an exhibition of specimens of endangered fish. (Li Hao, Tian Lu) |
