What is success? I think there is more than one answer to this question. Success means different things to different people.

For students, success means keeping a good academic record. For parents, success means building a harmonious home for their families. For doctors, success means helping patients alleviate suffering and cure patients. For scientists, success means making new discoveries that could benefit mankind. For the head of a nation, success means enabling his people to live well.

Undoubtedly, success plays an important part in our lives. Then how do we achieve success? As far as I’m concerned, there are many factors that contribute to success. I think the following are critical.

First of all, diligence is essential. Just as Thomas Edison puts it, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” Take Helen Keller for example. She became blind and deaf due to illness when she was only 19 months old. But she became a successful teacher and writer, which was due to her years of hard work.

Secondly, a successful person must be persistent and strong-minded. Otherwise, one will be easily defeated by difficulties and failures. We should never lose heart in the face of difficulties, and gain experiences from them.

Thirdly, we must seek opportunities for success. When Newton was sitting under an apple tree, an apple accidentally fell on his head, which led him to the discovery of gravity. The story tells us that we should grasp every opportunity and take full advantage of it.

In conclusion, success is something that must be accumulated step by step.
