Young volunteers teach at Leizhou school
    2012-08-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

暑期青年志愿者义教走进雷州市杨家中学

Wang Yuanyuan

A total of 30 young volunteers are now teaching at Yangjia Middle School in Leizhou City and will spend their summer vacation with more than 600 students in Yangjia Township, according to the city's association of volunteers last week.

The volunteers include 26 university students and four who are studying at overseas universities and they will help improve students' studies and hold entertainment and sports activities for students, said Shi Guangyu, a member of the city's voluntary team for youth.

Shi participated in a three-month voluntary teaching program at the school with his team mates. "During our services at the school, we found that many students in rural village did not have a proper learning environment at home. They did not know how to control them and their parents all worked in the city, so we decided to launch such a program during the summer vacation so that they don't have to waste their time," said Shi.

The volunteer teachers will give lectures on courses such as mathematics, Chinese, English and physics and will also hold training sessions on dancing, singing, painting, tai chi, martial arts and security knowledge.

"It is a great experience. We have so much fun with the students. Our purpose is to help them with their studies and help open their minds. They are very hungry for knowledge, so we should make the best of this opportunity," said Liang Yu, a volunteer from the South China Normal University.
