Summer transition
    2012-08-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Dear readers,

With the opening of the London Olympics, summer is well and truly upon us. For some of us, however, summer isn’t just about having a warm, relaxing time; it’s also a major transition into the next school year. Whether it is taking the leap from middle school to high school or moving on to college, we find ourselves preparing and adjusting.

One of the preparations I find useful is reviewing class material in advance. In the U.S., textbooks are often incorporated as part of the curriculum, and thus serve as an accurate study guide during the summer. Unfortunately, they are lent to students only for the duration of the school year. In the summer, students do not have access to this resource.

Buying textbooks is an option, but these hardcover texts with thick binding can cost anyone up to US$300. Luckily, there are more economical ways to gain access to these books. For example, many students have resorted to buying second-hand books online. There are plenty of second-hand books that come in prime condition — with minimal damage at less than half the cost of a brand-new one. By doing so, studying during the summer without spending a fortune is a smart way to prepare.

In addition to academic preparation on the student’s part, schools also organize orientation to aid the transition. A typical example is freshmen orientation. During orientation, students are introduced to their new environment where they meet new people. Orientation is a great opportunity to get to know others, especially because everyone is equally eager to make new friends! In some cases, it is necessary for students to register for orientation events, although some events may be mandatory. Most of the time, orientation occurs right before the official start of the school year, serving its purpose as students ease into a new phase of life.

As the new school year approaches, I wish everybody good luck in their transitions.

    Sincerely, Bingyin
