A total of 18 outstanding young teachers set off to the Malaysian state of Sabah on Friday to teach local students voluntarily.

The teachers were chosen from Shekou Yucai Education Group and Bao’an Education Science Research Training Center and will stay with local students for 10 days.

They will be divided into six groups and teach courses such as sinology, Chinese folk music, folk dance, singing, waist drum, poetry reciting, ping pong and basketball.

More than 550 Sabah-born students of Chinese descent will attend the course.

Shenzhen has held summer camps for Sabah-born Chinese students every year since 1991 and more than 2,200 students have participated in activities in Shenzhen over the past 20 years. It was the first time the city has sent teachers to hold summer camps in Sabah.

“We hope to help more overseas Chinese students slearn about Chinese culture through the camp and more teachers are expected to be sent abroad for similar cultural exchanges in the future,” said Zhong Yingteng, director of the city’s overseas Chinese affairs office.
