A 14-year-old boy became the youngest freshman at the South University of Science and Technology of China (SUST) this year.

Wang Yuchen scored 656 points on this year’s National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE), more than 70 points higher than the score required to gain entry into a key university in his native Shandong Province.

“It is nice to be here. I like the university’s teaching style and its environment. I have enjoyed every minute here,” Wang said.

Wang entered primary school at the age of 4 and was allowed to skip two grades because of his academic excellence.

Wang had never left his hometown of Qingzhou, Weifang City before coming to Shenzhen but he has found it easy to adapt to life here.

“My parents left Shenzhen after sending me to university. Although I am much younger than my other classmates, I have already learned to interact with people who are older than me,” Wang said.

University officials said they did not intend to treat Wang differently than any other student.

“Wang is young, but he entered the university through the legitimate channel of the NCEE so he has adapted well. We teach according to the individual personalities and talents of our students, but we will not give special attention to him,” said Zhu Qingshi, president of the university.

Wang, who is currently going through the obligatory month of military training before beginning his studies, is now living with two classmates at the university. “He is very nice and cheerful. He is pleasant to live with and very independent. We don’t have to take special care of him,” said Yang Zichao, Wang’s roommate.

Wang is looking forward to starting his courses. “I like chemistry the most, so I may choose chemistry as my major when I am in the third year,” Wang said.
