A psychological health education week commenced at Qianhai School in Nanshan District on Monday, aimed at raising awareness of psychological health among students, teachers and parents.

It is the first activity of its kind held at the school and a series of activities such as competitions, lectures, seminars for parents and community interactive activities will also be held during the six-day event, Dai Honghui, principal of the school, said Monday at the opening ceremony.

"We hope that both teachers and students will go home understanding the importance of a good lifestyle in maintaining psychological health," Dai said.

The seminar for parents, "Happy Parent," focuses on creating a healthy envoronment for children at home.

"Psychological health is very important. I found that many children now have good living conditions, but there are still numerous threats to their psychological health. I think the school should hold more activities like these to help them build students' characters," He Ping, the mother of a student at the school, said at the seminar Monday.

Lack of awareness of what psychological health means and why it is so important is problematic in China. "Because of this misunderstanding, many people don't pay attention to their psychological health in daily life, so that's why we hold such event to introduce what psychological health is and how to keep your mind healthy," vice principal Jiang Heyong said.

In Jiang's opinion, most young students don't suffer from any serious psychological problems, but they will still have problems such a sense of isolation or powerlessness. "We hope that such events can become a bridge for students, schools and parents," Jiang said.

The school also plans to publish psychological handbooks for students in the future and parents and students will also be invited to contribute to the book.
