Everyone has dreams, and the 11-year-old Billy Elliot has a particularly unusual one. Despite living in a tough coal mining town in northeast England, he hopes to become a professional ballet dancer. Billy’s father and elder brother are both coal miners, affected by the miner’s strike of the mid-1980s. Forced by his father, Billy takes boxing lessons, but under the guidance of ballet teacher Mrs.Wilkinson he secretly attends dance lessons. However, after the boxing teacher tells Billy’s father about his son’s lack of attendance, Billy’s father forbids him from taking ballet lessons. Billy rebels by taking the lessons in secret. His father and brother take out their anger about the political situation on Billy. However, after watching Billy dance, his father sees that his son has a special talent and supports him in his pursuit of a dream. Mrs. Wilkinson believes Billy is good enough to enter the Royal Ballet School in London where he can receive the best training. Billy’s father takes him to London to audition. Despite his nerves, Billy performs well, but one major mistake makes Billy and his father think he has failed. Some days later, Billy gets a letter informing him that he has been admitted to the Royal Ballet School. Fourteen years later, Billy is a successful ballet dancer. The film ends with Billy performing in the lead role on a West End stage while his childhood friends watch. This is one of the most touching stories I have known. If you have a dream, persist to make it slowly come true. Trust yourself and you can achieve anything. |
