    Aircraft carrier lands successfully

China has successfully landed a flight on its first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, naval sources said. A new J-15 fighter jet was used as part of the landing exercise.

After its delivery to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy on September 25, the aircraft carrier has undergone a series of sailing and technological tests, including the flight of the carrier-borne* J-15. The successful flight landing also marked the debut of the J-15 as China's first generation of multi-purpose, carrier-borne fighter jets, the PLA Navy said.

20 miners die in Guizhou coal mine explosion

Twenty miners were confirmed dead and three others were trapped after a coal-gas outburst ripped apart a coal mine in southwestern China's Guizhou Province on November 24.

The search for the three trapped workers intensified after gas levels in the pit declined and rescuers were expected to reach the trapped miners on November 25, said Yin Zhihua, vice mayor of the city of Liupanshui. Twenty-eight miners were working underground when the accident occurred at 10:55 a.m. Saturday at the Xiangshui Coal Mine, provincial authorities said.

    Shanxi restaurant blast

Survivors of a huge explosion at a hot pot restaurant that killed 14 people in Shanxi Province told how diners jumped out of second-story windows to escape the blast.

The powerful blast blew out car windows and bent the iron gate of a shop across the street when it ripped through the Happy Sheep Hot Pot Restaurant in Shouyang County shortly before 8 p.m. on November 23.

Yuan Heping, who was dining with his wife on the first floor of the three-story restaurant, told Xinhua that he heard a deafening boom and felt a blast of heat before black smoke filled the room.

    China's first pro boxing champ

Xiong Zhaozhong scored a unanimous* decision victory over Mexico's Javier Martinez Resendiz on November 24 to become China's first world champion in the sport of professional boxing.

In his 25 professional fights, Xiong has fought seven opponents in their professional boxing debut. Including Resendiz, he has only fought five opponents with winning records and he lost three of those fights.
