    Student dies after run

A Student at Donghua University in Shanghai died in a hospital on November 27 after collapsing* at the finish line of a 1,000-meter running heat at the school, Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The student, surnamed Miao, fainted after crossing the finish line and a school doctor performed CPR* at the scene before calling an ambulance*. Miao was rushed to Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital Songjiang Branch and pronounced dead 45 minutes after arriving.

    Drivers to be deported

Singapore deported 29 bus drivers back to China on Sunday and would prosecute five others for taking part in the city state’s first strike since the 1980s.

The order from the Ministry of Manpower came a day after the Chinese Government urged Singapore to respect the workers’ legal rights.

The ministry said the work permits of 29 drivers had been revoked* and immigration officials “will be repatriating* them” for involvement in a two-day stoppage* to demand better pay and working conditions.

    ‘Nail house’ demolished

A house that had stood in the middle of a new road for more than a year was finally demolished on Saturday in Zhejiang Province, ending a long confrontation* between the owner and the government over compensation.

Homes at the center of such disputes, left standing while work proceeds around them, are known in China as “nail houses” because they stick out and are difficult to remove, like a particularly stubborn nail.

    Fastest cold-terrain rail

The world’s fastest railway line in areas with extremely low temperatures went into service on Saturday in three provinces in northeastern China, to help revitalize* the region’s industrial base.

The high-speed network carries trains that travel up to 350 km per hour. The network opened after passing a two-month test during which the region saw blizzards and temperatures as low as minus-40 degrees Celsius.
