I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t interested in law. One day, I was with friends when I bought a packet of crisps. After paying, we discovered that the crisps had actually expired three months earlier. When we confronted the shopkeeper, he tried to worm his way out of taking responsibility. I soon recalled the consumer rights laws I had once read about in a book. I explained to the shopkeeper as calmly as I could that if he didn’t return my money, I would launch a lawsuit against the shop. But the shopkeeper would still not back down, and in fact became even more hubristic about his chances of getting away with it. We went to the local industrial and commercial bureau. After examining the expired food, the officials in the office decided to fine the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper was very upset. I was praised by the officials for my knowledge of, and willingness to uphold, the law. |
