    SH probes ‘instant chicken’

    Shanghai’s food and drug authorities are inspecting batches* of chicken reported to be fed with illegal medicine and 18 kinds of antibiotics* to keep them alive and boost their growth.

    Batches of what China Central Television called “instant chicken” were ready to be served at fast- food restaurants after they were transported to the Shanghai logistics* center of Yum Brands Inc., the world’s largest restaurant company and owner of KFC and Pizza Hut.

    

    Landing system failure

    More than 1,000 air passengers were affected when the landing system at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport broke down Tuesday night.

    An instrument landing system is a ground-based approach system providing precision* guidance to an aircraft approaching and landing on a runway, using a combination of radio signals and high-intensity* lighting to enable a safe landing.

    Airport authorities said 57 flights were affected by the breakdown.

    

    SZ-Beijing high-speed train tickets on sale

    Tickets of G17, a high-speed train from Shenzhen North Station to Beijing West Railway Station, went on sale at 10 a.m. on December 20.

    The train departs from Shenzhen at 7:56 a.m. and arrives in Beijing at 6:21 p.m. The train, which will be in service from December 26, is expected to cut travel times between the two metropolises to 10 hours 21 minutes.

    

    400 held for rumors

    More than 400 cult members have been detained in Qinghai Province for spreading rumors* and disrupting public order, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

    The suspects all belong to the “Almighty God” cult*. They allegedly* organized at least eight incidents in early December in Qinghai.

    China recently launched a nationwide crackdown* on the cult after its members spread rumors that the sun will not shine and electricity will not work for three days beginning from December 21. The rumor is based on the Mayan doomsday prophecy.
