It happened on Wednesday, February 13. My chemistry teacher was teaching us how to solve a problem in the buffer system on the board. Some of my classmates were studying Greek and others were dozing off. Suddenly, the alarm in the classroom went off and our smart phones started to vibrate: “Evacuation Drill! Everyone head to the chapel!” The entire class got excited and people rushed out of the classroom. When we all sat down in the chapel, the dean stood on the podium and said: “The local fire department was really impressed with our performance in the last drill…” Some kids were so disappointed when she finished her speech by saying “Leave in peace. Seniors first.” Seniors stood up sadly and started to walk out. Wait! The headmaster showed up from the side! Everyone stopped what they were doing and turned to him. He smiled, walking slowly onto the stage. He kept silent for a moment, then he spoke: “You know… I’ve been pretty tired since winter.” Everyone exclaimed: He was saying that tomorrow would be the Headmaster Holiday! Headmaster Holiday is a special day off usually in the second week of February. It is purchased by a family in the school auction earlier in winter and the family decide which day they want the headmaster to announce it. The head always tries to find an interesting way to make this announcement; last year he hid under a blanket beneath the stage in the theater for 30 minutes before jumping out and surprising us. The school arranged a movie trip for us on Wednesday night so we could go see some movies for free with friends. For most of the students, the week was quite busy, so they could also catch up with their work, study for tests and work on their projects on Thursday. My Wednesday night was happy but brief. The next day I went back to my room and started to finish my English essay and history paper. The deadline is arriving! |
