Student art show explores life and society

An exhibition of art set to showcase paintings by students of Shenzhen College of International Education (SCIE) took place on March 22 on the SCIE campus.

The paintings are mostly explorations of life and society, and some of the works depict themes including the different stages in the journey that is life, the identity of woman in society, and the spiritual outlook of humankind at times of suffering or great stress. Some works depict life and death, using symbols like flowers and bones, and other paintings convey the beauty of buildings and their architecture as they gain historical significance and undergo natural changes. And several paintings seek to explore the relationship between humans and objects — for example: how people are affected by their inventions.

Xiong Ying is contributing “Hide Away,” a series of works portraying people during moments of depression, and she said her own experience gave her inspiration. “I was sometimes troubled by pressure with my studies and family members. My works are just an eruption of my emotions. In my paintings, I depict many figures with their face covered because I notice in daily life that women like to use their hair or hands to conceal their face when they are feeling down,” Xiong said.

The paintings on display demonstrate that students are very perceptive about life and society. Wang Menghan said she tries to excavate the rebellious and independent character of woman by depicting figures with a peaceful and mild-mannered appearance. “My works are a research of the role of women throughout the history of China. Some of them were prevented from doing what they like. I want to show modern women who courageously struggle to pursue their dreams,” Wang said.

This is the first time that students’ works have been displayed publicly before they will be sent to Cambridge, in Britain, where they will be assessed and graded, as a necessary step for the students to be enrolled in international art colleges.
