Quake kills 1 in Taiwan The strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan on March 27 killed at least one person and injured another 86. A 6.1-magnitude*earthquake hit Nantou County at 10:03 a.m. and was followed by at least five aftershocks*, the Taiwanese meteorological bureau’s earthquake monitoring center said. The China Earthquake Networks Center said the quake’s magnitude was 6.5. Swiss formula ‘adulterated’ The Chinese partner of Hero Group, a major Swiss baby formula* manufacturer, has been accused of adulterating* Hero’s production, and a senior executive has been detained, State media said on March 28. State broadcaster CCTV said the Chinese company Xile Lier has been mixing out-of-date formula with imported Hero formula. It is the latest food safety scandal to hit China. 2 die from H7N9 flu Three cases of human infections of H7N9 avian influenza*, commonly known as bird flu, were recently detected in Shanghai and Anhui Province. Two peope in Shanghai have died, the other is in critical condition. The strain of avian influenza, H7N9, was previously only detected in poultry*. And there has never been a case of human infection. An 87-year-old male in Shanghai who got sick on Feburary 19 and died on March 4, a 27-year-old male in Shanghai who became ill on Feburary 27 and died on March 10, and a 35-year-old female in Chuzhou City of Anhui who became ill on March 9. And a new patient is found in Nanjing. Bodies found at slide site Fifty-four bodies were found by yesterday evening at the site of Friday’s massive landslide in a mining area in the Tibet Autonomous* Region, rescuers said. Another 29 miners remained missing, two days after the landslide in Maizhokunggar County, about 68 kilometers from the regional capital of Lhasa.
