Over 100 Shenzhen Middle School students admitted by U.S. universities
    2013-04-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

     深中一百多名高中生被美国名校录取

A total of 103 senior students at Shenzhen Middle School have been admitted by elite institutes in the United States, with their scholarships amounting to more than US$3 million, the Daily Sunshine reported on April 12.

Gao Qing, director of the school’s international curriculum system, said 127 students in the school had applied to overseas colleges by April 9, and 103 had been admitted to the top 50 universities and colleges in America, including Columbia University, Stanford University, Cornell University, California Institute of Technology and more.

The students, who all took courses in the school’s international curriculum, achieved outstanding scores on their Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), with their average scores higher than global averages.

Liu Yuxi, a Senior 3 student who received five offers, including one from California Institute of Technology, said he decided to study abroad when he was a Junior 3 student. He is the only student in Guangdong Province to be recruited by the institute. Liu was once expected to become a lawyer by his parents, who are civil servants in the legal sector, but said he became interested in mathematics when he was 5 and later was attracted by physics.

“I think the world is full of pseudo-science, except for physics,” Liu said.

Liu told Shenzhen Daily that he loves to read English books on mathematics, biology, anatomy and linguistics, and he is also a music lover, especially the saxophone.

Liu said his heroes included legendary physicists such as Isaac Newton, Qian Xuesen and Wu Chien-shiung. “Becoming a theoretical physicist is my dream,” he said.

Another student, Song Guchuan, has received 11 offers — the most among his classmates — including from the University of Chicago and Duke University.

“I have benefited a lot from the international-level courses in my school, which are carried out in research and discussions rather than with traditional exercise-driven methods,” Song said.

Luo Jiaqi received scholarship offers totaling US$500,000, the highest amount among her classmates.

“My tutor encouraged me to include my experiences in volunteer teaching and a media internship in my applications,” Luo said, while thanking her teachers for their roles in her success. “They don’t merely emphasize good points in our academic studies, but also help us explore our unique characters and advantages.”

The largest offer Luo received was from the University of Richmond, which offered a full, four-year scholarship totaling US$280,000 to cover her tuition and accommodations.(Zhao Jie)
