Science and tech contest showcases students’ inventions
    2013-04-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    广东省青少年科技创新大赛在深举行

About 500 inventions created by 455 Guangdong Province students were showcased at the 28th Guangdong Adolescents’ Science and Technology Innovation Contest held over the weekend at Shenzhen Second Foreign Languages School.

Sun Zhiyuan, a Senior 1 student at the school, has become a national patent winner with his invention of a device to prevent drivers from mistakenly stepping on the accelerator in emergencies. Sun said he came up with the idea for the invention after he read reports of car accidents that resulted from new drivers wrongly stepping on the gas. The device allows the gas pedal to work only when pressed slowly, not when slammed to the floor.

Sun also is trying to reduce the cost of his invention to a few hundred yuan so it can be widely applied to vehicles.

Another invention, by Senior 2 student Dai Jiang, improves glass-breaking safety hammers by adding spring-motivated force. She said she was inspired to make her invention after reading media reports about people trapped in vehicles during rainstorms and floods last year, uanble to get out because they couldn’t break car windows. Dai said she tested several safety hammers that she bought online and found them unable to break glass panes. She is also applying for a patent for her invention so that it can help people in need.

The top inventions from the contest will be sent to a national contest held in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, in July.(Zhao Jie)
