Student poet reminisces of childhood and hometown
    2013-04-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Wang Huiwen, who studies at Tiancheng School in Longgang District, had his first collection of poems published in March. His love of life and his hometown — Shaoguan, Guangdong Province, is the major theme of his work.

Wang’s interest in poetry began when he attended a reading of famed Taiwan poet and painter Xi Murong’s poems at an event in his school.

Wang, 15, came to study in Shenzhen in 2006 and became more withdrawn in his new surroundings. At this time, he found solace in poems, and he likes both classical and modern poetry.

He lived with his grandmother as a child and dearly loved her and his hometown. Many of his poems were inspired by his memories of childhood.

Once he made a phone call to his grandmother whom he had not seen for half a year, and he became very emotional. As soon as the conversation ended, he immediately sat down and composed a poem, depicting the beautiful scenes in his hometown and his sadness at having to leave the place.

In October 2011, Wang sent a poem by email to his teacher Luo Caimeng, in which he honored his grandmother’s memory by describing her hands. The next day, Luo distributed the poem to Wang’s classmates and encouraged him to continue composing poetry, which increased Wang’s confidence.

In March, his first poetry collection of 142 poems was published with the assistance of his school, but some of his early attempts were lost due to a computer problem. However, Wang does not cry over spilt milk, saying that he can compose the same poems if he wants.

Wang is now busy preparing for his junior graduation exam, and he intends to write about this period, as it is an important part of his life. (Zhao Jie)
