Arousing students’ interest in writing compositions
    2013-05-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A number of Grade 1 students in my primary school do not like writing compositions.

Their dislike can be attributed to a variety of reasons, such as a lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes or being ridiculed and a reluctance to spend more time on writing. But according to my years of teaching experience and research, the primary reason lies in a lack of interest.

Albert Einstein once said, “Interest is the best teacher.” To stimulate and cultivate students’ interest in writing can be a good and effective way to help them make progress.

Good compositions result from diversified life experiences and observations, wide reading and a lot of practice. Several methods can be adopted to foster students’ interest in writing.

Since Grade 1 students have very limited life experiences and do not have clear learning motives or definite learning purposes, they do not know what to write or how to write it. Teachers can guide students to observe life carefully and participate in all kinds of activities they are interested in, then write down their personal experiences and feelings. By writing about what they are familiar with and interested in, they can attain a good sense of pride and accomplishment.

Teachers can also initiate diversified reading programs, such as reading clubs and literature and arts discussions, to enrich students’ writing materials. By doing so, students can gain knowledge they have not experienced by themselves and exchange ideas with others.

Appreciating students’ works is another way to motivate them to write. This means acknowledging students’ writing efforts. Many students don’t like to write for fear of making mistakes. It is important for teachers to encourage rather than criticize when evaluating students’ works, to create a cheerful and relaxed environment. Teachers should encourage students to engage in effective practices for good compositions.

Finally, allowing students to share their works is key. Either give students the opportunity to discuss their work or place the work on display. This can make students get inspiration from their peers.
