It is hard for a man to live without friends. For some, a friend is to a person what air and water are to life. Friends are an indispensable part of human life. Imagine what it would be like if a man was all alone by himself. He would have to eat alone, watch movies alone, sing songs alone and dance alone. How pathetic! A friend is a person who always stands by one’s side, sharing all of life’s happinesses and sorrows.

    In my opinion, there are two kinds of friends: new friends and old friends. You can meet new friends anytime, but some can’t stay with you for the rest of your life because the friendship may be easy to end. But some new friends can be turned into lifelong friends as time goes by. Having new friends doesn’t require us to abandon the old ones. They both have witnessed our growth in different periods and are irreplaceable.

    My ideal friends should have the following qualities. First, understanding and tolerance, which are important factors in maintaining friendships.

    “To err is human; to forgive, divine,” said Alexander Pope.

    It is always wise to put yourself in others’ shoes before losing your temper. Second, friends should share common interests. The more common interests one has with his friends, the closer they will be. An ideal friend is not just a playmate, but also a model who can set an example in certain aspects. Just as the saying goes, “A good friend brings you to heaven but an evil one leads you to hell.”
