LOCATED northeast of Dali City in Yunnan Province, Shuanglang Ancient Town is home to many famous scholars and artists in China, and is well-known for its beautiful natural scenery, romantic ancient architecture and well-preserved folk culture. It is a place for sightseeing and a place for doing nothing. For those who enjoy exciting groups and adventures, this may not be your ideal destination, but for those seeking a quiet, lazy getaway, there may not be a better place than here. Erhai Lake is the largest highland lake after Dianchi and one of the seven biggest freshwater lakes in China. It is an ear-shaped lake and as large as a sea, hence its name. The lake covers 250 square kilometers and lies between Cangshan Mountain and Dali City. On a sunny day, the crystal waters of Erhai Lake and the snow-mantled Cangshan Mountain are a radiant combination. The scene is commonly described as “Silver Cangshan and Jade Erhai.” The surrounding islands, temples and villages are worth visiting, too. The nearby fishing villages of the Bai ethnic minority deserve a visit, with attractive local culture and lifestyle. The unforgettable Xiaoputuo Island, originally devoted to Bodhisattva Kwan-yin, can be traced back to the 15th century. It is an ideal place to experience the unique architectural styles of an ancient Chinese Buddhist temple. There are many romantic and stylish inns and cafes around Erhai Lake. Many of the inns were opened by former artists or white-collar executives from big cities who tried to pursue a peaceful and different way of life in beautiful Shuanglang. Recommended hotels and inns include Yunqi Inn, Qinglu Inn, Sun Palace and Fensi Hotel. If it’s fishing season, travelers can fish with local villagers and enjoy warm sun on the lake.
