Ten-year-old Malaysian singer Crystal Lee won the best actress award at the Shanghai International Film Festival on Sunday. By winning for her role in Hong Kong movie “Unbeatable,” Lee became the youngest actress ever to win the award. Her co-star, Nick Cheung Ka-fai, who played a boxer in the movie, was awarded best actor. Lee played Cheung’s neighbor — a daughter of a mentally disabled single mother who lives in Macao. At the awards ceremony, Lee charmed the audience by greeting them in Malay, Japanese, and Cantonese and Shanghai dialects. Talking about her first reaction when hearing the announcement, she said, “I was so excited, my heart was about to pop out. I couldn’t believe that it was me instead of other famed actresses.” Lee walked into the limelight when she was only 5 years old, and gained fame as a child star on TV commercials. Later, she got professional training in singing and competed in an ongoing children’s singing contest, “Let’s Sing Kids,” produced by Hunan Satellite TV. As a familiar face on screens, Lee saw her career leap after appearing in “The Viral Factor” with Hong Kong actor Nicholas Tse in 2012. Lee disclosed her dreams to media after receiving her award on Sunday. “Being an actor is always my pursuit. I am looking forward to winning an Oscar,” she said. “I never feel tired as both a student and an actress. Instead, I enjoy this kind of life, because I am doing what I dream to do.”(Cecilia Tan) |
