Our conference on global warming
    2013-07-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

My class was lucky to be chosen by our geography teacher Yu Hong to have an open class that would set an example for schools in our district.

We felt excited and a bit nervous when we heard the news. The topic of the class was “problems that human beings are facing — global warming.” To prepare for the class, we spent lots of time surfing the Internet and collecting information and sources.

The class was presented in a model United Nations format. We were divided into seven groups: Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, Oceania and Antarctica.

At the beginning of the class, we watched a video on the dust haze in Beijing. It gave us a brief impression of the current environmental problems. Then, the representatives of each continent listed detailed outcomes that global warming had brought to their continent. Then we started group discussions on the causes of global warming and possible measures to be taken.

After that, we had a conference, which was the highlight of the class, to report our discussions. The representative of Antarctica said we should emit less carbon dioxide into the air and stressed the importance of planting trees. What impressed me most was that some speakers criticized other countries for their faults in causing global warming. The representative of the United States admitted that they had done something bad regarding global warming, and therefore, he and his country should bear responsibility and take the lead to stop global warming. What’s more, the spokesman of China promised they would try their best to protect the environment.

In the class, everyone was involved and not shy when speaking in public. We were much more active than usual. The class raised our awareness of environmental protection issues. I think our class set a very successful example for organizing a model United Nations conference.
