Kiernan Shipka has always been the child-wonder of the TV show “Mad Men.” Now she has the opportunity to further test her acting muscle in Lifetime’s reboot of the classic novel “Flowers in the Attic.” Shipka and Mason Dye are cast as the Dollganger siblings. Shipka’s Cathy Dollganger develops an incestuous relationship with her brother Chris while trapped in the titular attic by their religious-fanatic grandmother, set to be played by Ellen Burstyn. It’s obviously a racy role, but that’s nothing Shipka can’t handle after six seasons of conveying the emotional turmoil of “Sally Draper,” from childhood masturbation to teenage rebellion. The new film is being written by “Up All Night’s” Kayla Alpert and directed by Deborah Chow. While the book has sold millions of copies worldwide, it has generated its share of controversy for themes of incest. The novel was previously adapted into a movie in 1987, starring Victoria Tennant as Corinne, Louise Fletcher as Olivia, and Kristy Swanson and Jeb Stuart Adams as Cathy and Chris. It’s hard to know how the Lifetime movie will turn out, but it will certainly be worth watching to see if this is an indication of where Shipka’s career is headed, following the upcoming final season of “Mad Men.” Shipka has so far not done much noteworthy work outside of “Mad Men.” (SD-Agencies) |
