Austin Mahone wins VMA for Artist to Watch
    2013-08-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, a new YouTube sensation, Austin Mahone, was crowned when he took home one of the evening’s top prizes.

A possible heir to the Justin Bieber throne, Mahone won the Artist to Watch honor at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. The 17-year-old crooner nabbed the award in recognition of his third single, “What About Love.”

Mahone will release his debut album on October 8. “What About Love” marks the most successful single from the project to date, peaking at No. 18 on Mainstream Top 40 chart.

During his acceptance speech, Mahone thanked God and his mother, who raised him as a single mom, giving us some serious deja vu.

It was also the first time he went to the VMA — held this year at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

“I don’t even know what to say,” Mahone, 17, said upon taking the stage to nab his Moonman. “This is one of the coolest things ever.”

He posted a photo via Instagram and wrote: “Still can’t believe I won this award last night. Truly a dream come true and this just the beginning! Thank u for all you do.”

Backstage the 17-year-old told The Hollywood Reporter, “It feels amazing. It’s the best day ever. It was an honor to even be on the carpet, but I performed and I won the award, so I couldn’t have asked for a better night.”

In an interview with the trade paper two days ago, the teen admitted he watched the show growing up in Texas.

“I remember a long time ago when I was in school and I was supposed to be doing my homework and I would watch the VMA instead. My mom would get so mad at me.”
