A city of parks benefits all

A PARK to popularize agricultural science will be built in Futian District on prime land of over 400,000 square meters.

Nongke Park, which is located at the northwest of the intersection of Xiangmihu Road and Hongli Road West, is believed to be one of the most valuable public areas in the district as house prices in the neighborhood have soared to over 50,000 yuan (US$8,100) per square meter.

In 30 years the number of parks in Shenzhen has grown from five to 841, ranging from small community parks to larger parks like Shenzhen Bay Park, which covers about 129 hectares and runs for more than 10 kilometers along the coast.

“Shenzhen ranks No.1 for the number of parks in China,” said Tian Xuegen, director of Shenzhen Parks Management Center. “At present, the city has 19 country-level parks including Tanglang Mountain, Maluan Mountain and Yangtai Mountain parks, 80 urban-level parks and, of course, community parks,” he said.

In the past 10 years alone the number of parks in Shenzhen has increased five-fold. During the 2011 Universiade, more than 140 new parks opened to the public.

According to the city’s parks construction plan, called the City of Parks, between 2012-20, the city will build links between parks by greenways which are easy for residents to access.

To achieve the ambitious plan the city will build an additional 400 parks in the coming eight years.
