SHENZHEN China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) launched a second-phase construction project, which will represent the global leader in panel display technology, in Guangming New Area on Saturday. The second-phase project, which is expected to cost 24.4 billion yuan (US$3.98 billion), will form a TFT-LCD industrial cluster with an annual production value of 160 billion yuan, the company said. The CSOT project is an advanced homemade TFT-LCD production line. The first phase began in November 2009 and was put into operation within 17 months. Its major business indicators reached a level of international advancement and its product sales volume rose to be the world’s top 5. Meanwhile, the company’s abilities in innovation improved remarkably and have activated the biggest FPD research and development line of generation 4.5. “The launch of the second phrase is a sign of a new breakthrough for CSOT, and is a significant measure for accelerating the upgrading of the domestic panel display industry, perfecting industrial chain facilities and enhancing the strength of panel display industries in the Pearl River Delta,” said Zhang Xiaoqiang, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission. In the four years since the establishment of CSOT, the supply of panels in the Chinese market has increased 31 percent. The company said the second-phase project would further strengthen its capability in researching and developing new products and technology, including IGZO, AMOLED, and it will have another important breakthrough after commanding the production capacity of LCD TV industrial chains. The second phase of construction is expected to stimulate the development of strategic emerging industries in Shenzhen and play a significant role in the city’s electronics industry.
