On ‘Sherlock’
    2013-11-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Have you heard of Sherlock Holmes, the legendary detective? Most of you may answer “yes” because the man, well-known for his intelligence, is the main character in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories. Then again, have you seen the hot TV series about the brilliant detective — “Sherlock?”

“Sherlock” is a British television crime drama produced by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor Watson. Two seasons, consisting of three episodes each, have been produced since 2010 with three more episodes to be produced this year.

Among all the adaptions of Doyle’s works, this one is quite distinctive as it is set in the 21st century in London where the illustrious Holmes and Watson set off on their adventures, instead of the Victorian Era. More stylish elements, such as smartphones and blogs, have also been added. The image of Holmes differs from those of before; Holmes here is not only odd and brilliant, but also cold and a little arrogant. He is also a techie, who always speaks incredibly fast and sometimes says something humorous in a cool voice.

In the first season, having dealt with several odd cases, Jim Moriarty turns out to be the person who caused the series of cases before, and he sets deadlines to solve a series of apparently unrelated cases. In the next season, Holmes and his friend Watson meet a mysterious and smart woman named Irene Adler. Then, Moriarty does everything he can to beat Holmes, he even “shoots” himself, and finally Holmes jumps off a high building and lies in the blood. However, in the last few seconds, Holmes unexpectedly appears alive.

As of now, what confuses fans most is how Holmes survives after jumping off the building. Only after the third season comes out can we know the answer. Adler once commented on Holmes that “brainy is the new sexy.” I hope we can be amazed by Holmes’ marvelous intelligence once again in the coming episodes.

How do Holmes and Watson get through these tough cases? What is the meaning of the relationship between Holmes and Adler? If you want to figure all that out, you should watch this fantastic TV series.
