Concerts, college, and the city
    2013-11-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Who would have thought that a few minutes of scrolling on Facebook would lead to an incredibly exciting evening in Philadelphia? Last week, I discovered that one of my favorite singers, Kina Grannis, was holding a concert in the city — in fact, at my brother’s college, the University of Pennsylvania.

The extremely talented Asian-American, originally from California, rarely performs shows in Pennsylvania, let alone at my brother’s very own school! Tickets were just eight dollars, and there was to be a meet-and-greet after the show. There was no way I could pass up the opportunity. I knew this would be the experience of a lifetime — and it was!

My mother dropped me off at the Penn college campus, where I met up with my brother, Michael. After eating a quick dinner, we headed to the Bodek Lounge at Houston Hall, where Grannis was to be performing in just one hour. After presenting our tickets, we edged our way into the tiny venue. When each and every single seat was filled, the doors swung open. There she was, clad in a cardigan and dress, the incredibly talented and inspirational singer-songwriter, Grannis!

I couldn’t even think over the roaring of the crowd. I could hardly wait for her to begin singing. After listening to her music on my iPod for so many years, I would finally be able to hear her voice, live, right in front of me!

Grannis stepped onstage and greeted everyone. Then, she tuned her guitar and began singing her first song, “World in Front of Me.” Her silken voice, accompanied by the melodious chords from her guitar, left the audience awestruck. The next hour of the show was simply magical. She sounded even better live than in her studio records!

When the show was over it was time to meet Grannis! My brother and I collected our belongings and rushed to the front of the line. I had an album in hand for her to sign, as well as a drawing of her to give.

Grannis gave me and my brother big hugs. I gave my drawing to her, which she regarded as,“Amazing! Thank you so much!” She signed the album and we took a couple of photos together. The most unbelievable thing? “I should have worn that dress!” Grannis exclaimed, laughing, as she pointed to my dress. “We have the same one!”

Grannis’ latest album, “Stairwells,” may be purchased on iTunes. See more at www.kinagrannis.com.
