I REFER to your article: “Public parking lots switched to government use,” dated Nov. 27. It has become clear to me that there is insufficient convenient parking space at Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint. I am familiar with the fact that we often try to park there but only the parking lot further away from the checkpoint has any space. The ones nearest to the checkpoint are full by 7:30 a.m. On a sunny day this may just be an inconvenience, but on rainy days you will be soaked by the time you reach the checkpoint. It would be appreciated if the city could build a massive 10-level parking plaza on the convenient parking lot space as well as above bus and taxi stops. At the same time, it would also be great if we could get similar arrangements on the Hong Kong side. There is now a huge custom clearance area for container trucks which is seldom used. We should allow Hong Kong cars to park there and walk to the checkpoint instead of having to park in Tuen Mun and take a taxi. All over the world people can cross borders conveniently in their cars. But ironically, when we want to move from one city (Hong Kong) to another city (Shenzhen) in the same country, it is not possible to do so. It is about time that we show we are really in one country, and allow free movement of cars to and from Hong Kong. Jeffry Kuperus via email |
