John Guy, owner of food and beverage chains
    2013-12-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Australian John Guy has an eye-opener of a business card.

As director of McCawley’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, Tequila Coyote Cantina and The Butcher Shop, flipping his card over reveals eight locations of the three brands: three McCawley’s spots in Shenzhen, one McCawley’s in Guangzhou, two cantinas in Shenzhen, one butcher shop in Shenzhen and another in Dongguan.

The three brands equate to a 60 million yuan (US$9.80 million) business annually.

“We have developed from what was a pub into a food and beverage company. Some 300 people are now working for us,” Guy told Shenzhen Daily.

“We have plans that within two years, the turnover can be over 100 million yuan. We want to be one of the biggest food and beverage businesses in Shenzhen.”

Guy and a Canadian partner opened the first McCawley’s in 2003 in Shekou and the butcher shop the next year. Guy said that having a Western pub, they needed their own sources of stored Western meat such as sausage and bacon.

“We import beef from Australia and use local chicken and pork. Now, because of the chicken flu, we import all chicken from Argentina,” said Guy.

Guy has been in China for more than 20 years. Seeing a lack of standard Western food available in Shenzhen, he saw great potential.

He opened the second McCawley’s in Gouwugongyuan, Futian District in 2009, and it has turned out to be the best business among his locations.

Guy said the key to success lies in details. He said he cares about small things, tries to get everything right and pursues Western food and services.

“Our business has been growing a lot since last year. We also supply food to a lot of five-star hotels and supermarket chains. We have our own food-processing factories which means we can control the costs and quality,” he said.
