Police host Open House

NEARLY 500,000 Shenzhen residents got a firsthand look at police officers’ jobs yesterday at the Shenzhen Police Open House, in which the Shenzhen Police Training School on Qiaocheng Road East was open to the public, along with 174 subvenues including police stations and firefighting departments.

In addition to displays of equipment such as a police helicopter and armed vehicles, along with demonstrations and activities such as paintball shooting, this year’s Open House featured programs enabling residents to experience firefighting, learn firefighting skills and “escape” from mock fire scenes.

A long line of residents, including many children, stretched in front of an area where firefighters demonstrated how to use fire extinguishers.

To enhance public awareness of fire safety, the fire department also held a fire extinguishing competition, put on a mock escape from a fire and invited residents to try out a fire chute.

“When people are caught in a fire, they can easily panic without knowing what to do. It is absolutely necessary for us, especially children, to learn skills in escaping from fires and even putting out fires,” said a Nanshan District resident surnamed Zhou, who attended the Open House with his son.

To improve awareness of traffic safety, Shenzhen traffic police held a forum on the topic of “Say No to Jaywalking,” with professors, experts and citizens on hand to discuss typical violations such as running red lights.

It was the ninth annual Open House hosted by Shenzhen police and firefighters.
