Effective leaders in need
    2014-01-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Do you agree with the following statement?

An effective leader tries to make others feel they are part of the decision-making process.

The most experienced leaders are always expected to listen to and think about their peers’ opinions. In order to optimize the efficiency of their cooperation, it is crucial that each person of the entire group participates in the decision-making process, so that they can contribute their understanding of the matter from multiple perspectives. This sense of participation not only helps each of them recognize their role in the group, but also promotes the communication of ideas during brainstorming as well.

Although the members can make their contributions to the group in various ways, it is still important that they voice their concerns and attitudes through group discussion so as to recognize their importance to the group. Due to differences in their personalities, people usually tend to play different roles in a group.

Moreover, the more outgoing a person is, the more likely he or she is to take a strong stand in the decision-making process. However, an effective leader, recognizing the innate differences of his companions’ characters, should encourage everyone in his group to help make decisions for the entirety. The involvement should be a compliment to the members if their suggestions are adopted by the group. Therefore, participation in decision-making process provides the members with a sense of belonging by rewarding them for taking up their responsibility for others.

Furthermore, the exchange of thoughts encourages brainstorming in the group, which helps the leader make better decisions through a holistic approach. If the leader makes the decision on his or her own, he or she can be very tempted to ignore the interests of his or her peers. Broad involvement of the members helps reach a consensus on the decision and guarantees the implementation of the subsequent plan, as all of them are already informed and willing to adopt the result.

The group members should always be encouraged to take the initiative in contributing their thoughts in the decision-making process. Not only does it keep up the morale in the group, but also makes the entire decision-making more productive.
