A few days ago I participated in a sports meet in the high jump category. As a matter of fact, I am not very athletic and I didn’t expect to win a prize. I participated in the event only to enjoy the competition. When I went to the field with my friend, I was excited and nervous. When I measured the standard height for the jump, my heart could hardly beat. It was higher than a desk in my class. I wasn’t nervous, but a bit afraid. Soon the competition began. The first person jumped over easily. I was too surprised to say a word. The second competitor did the same. The third nearly jumped over, but the pole fell down after he jumped. Finally, it was my turn. I took a deep breath and then ran towards the pole. Once in front of the pole, I began to jump. But my right foot hit the pole. “I failed,” I thought. Then another unlucky thing happened: I didn’t stand firmly and I tumbled and hurt my back badly. At that moment, I felt as if my back had been broken. After a very short rest, I stood up, pulled at my painful back and went out of the field with a flushed face. My friend ran to me. He asked me if I was OK. I felt too much pain to answer his question due to my injured back. I only shook my head, feeling very sad. Although I didn’t even finish the whole competition I was still very happy to attend the sports meet. A lot of my classmates tried their best and receieved many medals, and I was happy for them. They were all good examples for me to learn from. They were like heroes in my eyes. |
