We enjoy it and we love it. But some children who come from rural areas aren’t as lucky as us. Those children who moved to the city with their families from relatively poor places may actually have a strong desire to dance, but cannot afford it. Thus, we wanted to do something about it and we decided to organize a charity drive. Together, we had a brilliant idea. We made pretty, colorful gift bags and sold them at our dance academy’s performance so as to raise money to help children in need. We bought a variety of different colored pieces of fabric, which we paid for from our own allowance. Then, we designed and sewed gift bags in preparation of the event. Soon, with the help of our mothers, we finished hundreds of gift bags by the week of the performance. Finally came the sales day. We were about to perform “Swan Lake” at the Children’s Palace theater. As the performance drew near, all we could think about was the success of our charity sale. “This is it,” we whispered to ourselves. “The day we’ve all been waiting for.” Then, it was time. Mrs. Lan, the founder of our dance academy, came onstage to make a special announcement, informing the audiences about our initiative. We both took a deep breath and our small charity sale began. Actually, there was nothing to worry about. Swarms of people crowded around us as we franticly looked to their orders. In about 15 minutes, all those bags sold out. In total, we raised about 1,050 yuan (US$173). We came up to the stage and handed the money to Mrs. Lan. She was tickled pink with the news, and so were we. Following the event, Mrs. Lan received a number of phone calls from students’ parents, as they all wanted to join and contribute to the charity. We were proud to have done this for the children. We were delighted and pleased with our efforts. Most importantly, we were happy that we did something to help others realize their dreams. |
