Despicable in name, respectable in life
    2014-04-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Walking along a boisterous street, a wisp of smooth, but bright light drips on me from the lofty buildings in this crowded city. Surrounded by dazzling shops, a big poster hangs in the McDonald’s window. The little yellow minions on it are smiling at me with their adorable faces. Yes, they are the kind of creatures that inspire me to keep striving.

Even if you have never seen the movie “Despicable Me,” you must be familiar with the little yellow minions with extraordinarily big eyes, metal goggles and blue overalls. In the movie, they are always hanging around in rambunctious hordes and speaking jiberish. To be frank, they are not the main characters. These adorable creatures act as foils to their master and the film’s protagonist, Gru. Somehow, they successfully attracted audiences’ attention with their adorable giggling and appearance, thereby becoming a sparkling element in the movie. According to many commentaries on the Internet, the success of “Despicable Me” could be ascribed to them, the yellow minions.

In this, we can see an interesting phenomenon that is catching on in the entertainment field. It’s when one or two minor characters get to be even more influential than the protagonist is. The yellow minions definitely created a lot of commercial value and fan support. When the movie first came out, vast audiences were immediately attracted to these cute little things. Consequently, piles of products with images of minions showed up in the market.

Many works in history have similarities to “Despicable Me.” Truly, one’s position does not determine one’s effect on the world.

What does this mean? Living in a world filled with innumerable talented people, people can find themselves engulfed by a lack of confidence or self-awareness. Some people become depressed because they consider themselves a “minion” in life.

Earl of Chesterfield once said, “One may understand the cosmos, but never the ego; the self is more distant than any star.” Self-orientation is much more important than some people think. Individual people are never equal. When we feel frustrated and threatened by others’ fantastic achievements or behavior, the approval of ego is concealed. Therefore, we classify ourselves as a minion or loser sort. I remember when I first came to my high schoo, I was totally overwhelmed by my super awesome classmates! For a while, I was confused about my orientation in this big community. Am I just a minion, here to make others look good? If I am a minion, does that mean nothing about me is special?

The answer is “no.” No matter how much worse I do than others on something, I still have my own unique qualities.

So what is the best feature of yellow minions that we can learn from? They are not just robots without their own minds. Though they generally always obey their master’s orders in the movie, they never lose their own essence.

“Despicable Me” is just a name. No one is really despicable. No matter how deep you are buried, the world will eventually see you shine.

“Never frown, even when you are sad, because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.”

Conserve your own yellow minion in your soul and always act as the respectable protagonist in your own life.
