Watching tennis
    2014-06-11  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Dear readers,

It’s a few weeks into summer, and I must say that I’m thoroughly enjoying this warm and vibrant season! The weather is perfect for any sort of outdoor activity, from playing ultimate frisbee to taking a casual walk in the park after dinner.

Speaking of outdoor activities, did you follow the French Open? The tennis tournament took place from May to June 8. I enjoy watching tennis, and was able to catch a few matches live on television, which reminded me of the time I was able to watch the U.S. Open in person in New York.

The experience was actually a part of the university’s welcome week, which is an orientation held in the last week of August for incoming freshmen. The U.S. Open is held in Flushing, Queens, and we traveled as a group from campus via the subway. After arriving, we had to wait in line outside for a while before we were let into the stadium. It was a really hot day, and people came and left as the game went on. Sitting on the benches for hours under the glaring sun definitely dehydrated us. Nevertheless, we didn’t want to leave, for fear of missing a great rally. We stayed for several matches before finally heading back to campus. Being able to go to the U.S. Open was a one-of-a-kind experience. It sparked my interest in tennis as I was so astonished by how much strength and strategy was put into each serve and return. Watching the players and sensing their expectations behind each grunt and explosion of power reminded me of the years of hard work they must have put into the sport.

As the French Open winds down, I’m looking forward to watching many more matches, keeping in mind upcoming events such as the China Open in early September and the Wimbledon in June, among many other tournaments. Although I won’t be able to attend these matches in person, I know I’ll be sitting in front of my TV to watch some of these fantastic showdowns between the skillful, hardworking athletes. I know I’ll be reminded of my experience at the U.S. Open, and of the work ethic that leads to such skill and achievement.

Until next time, enjoy the beautiful weather!

    Sincerely,

    Bingyin
